Ok, all you "old" people out there who remember the 1983 original broadcast of the mini-series V, strap in and get ready. It seems ABC will be doing a re-make of the classic sci-fi mini-series starting 11/10/09.

http://abc.go.com/watch/v/240273/240461 ... ing_search

For those that are too young or have never seen the show, it was a interesting take on the nature of man, a new and updated telling of the story of the Nazi rise to power and the persecution of the Jews.

I have never really been impressed with "re-makes". As time passes on, "re-makes" tend to become more liberal and immoral then the original just because the degradation of the society. I really don't have high hopes for this one, but I'll check it out and see how it compares to the original.

I remember the old series well. I was 16 when that show came on and boy i think i had a crush on every female actress that appeared in it. I still vividly remember that scene when that one chick swallowed that rabbit/guinnie pig....or whatever it was whole in one gulp.....i think back and i know i said to myself "WOW".

I sorta also think that this remake is going to be lame and not be on the air very long. Some of the old relic shows should just be left alone and this is one of them. It just goes to show that there is no good ideas anymore. People have to remake old stuff to make a buck. Ive noticed that alot of music is going that way to.

Im curious though....i wonder if theyll remake that guinnie pig scene again heh.....well, lets hope not.

When Vader introduced me to the 1983, I went to get it straight away. They said that the remake will feature the monuments of the 1983 but too bad all of it will be new actors/actress. Is the Final Battle a good sequel to the original series?

On a side note, the director hinted that he wanted to work on a big screen picture. I don't know about you guys but its going to have to be nowhere near as good as the original one for it to buy the way into today's box offices.

Good luck getting away with a show that has any sort of political allegory these days. It's sad, too. With freedom of speech, you can say whatever you want, except on the one medium where people tend to actually listen.

V was great. And it had Freddy Kruger in it.

I'm too much of a cynical old fart to hold out any hope that a modern remake would do the series justice.

Well, depending how old you were back then.......children watching lizards eat domesticated rodents was probably frowned upon by some parents.

I may not be an old fart but I'm thinking the same thing.

Post Re: V
As for re-imaginings of old Sci-Fi series did anyone here like the re-imaged BattleStar Galatica series? It was much darker, series and deeper than the original.

As for V I was too young to watch the original miniseries back in the 80s. I just remember hearing about it and seeing commercials for it. However, I did see the Sci-Fi channel's, I'm sorry Sy-Fy (that's a stupid rebranding move!!!) rebroadcast of it a couple of weekends ago and it was ok. Its obvious that it was made on a low television budget from the 80s. I'm sure if I had watched it back in the 80s I would have founder memories of it. It also was blantantly trying to ride off the wave of the popularity of some of the other Sci-Fi staples of the day. My five year old came in the room at one point while I was watching the original. I paused it and he looked at the screen and asked me if the cameraman who was one of the leaders of the resistance was Han Solo. After he said that I thought about it and I was pretty impressed that my 5 year old picked up on that. Because now that he said that I'm sure that they cast him with imitating Han Solo in mind.

As for the new series... so far it is ok. I was surprised that it debuted with only a one hour episode. I thought that it would take much longer to get the core issues of the story going. But the first episode did manage to introduce the full concept including talk of forming a resistance. The World War II allegory doesn't seem to be there yet (I wonder if they will go there at all).

I tell you if I was a mediocre actor I would try my best to get on a Sci-Fi series because they seem to keep recycling the same group of actors and actresses. It was kind of funny watching the first couple of episodes of V with my wife and going all IMDB on my wife and telling her, "She was Lost last season, he was in the miniseries Taken and the 4400, he used to be on Firefly and he plays alpha on the Dollhouse, she was a cyclon in Battlestar Galatica, etc."

I completely agree with this statement. The debut episode of V, much like SW III and the turn of Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader, I felt rushed. It seems sci-fi shows/movies no longer want to layout a story or develop characters, it's just "let's get to the action!". The WWII allegory does seem pretty much untouched. So far, they have left out the whole rounding up and persecution of the scientists (jews). They did slightly touch on the facist control of the media, but not much.

Even with all of it's "deviations" from the original series, I am still finding it entertaining. I just have to look at it as a completely "new" series and not a "re-make" of the original series.

The new V series is only two episodes into it. So I'm willing to give it some time. In the original V miniseries they didn't start rounding up scientists until a few hours into the miniseries because they needed time for the visitors to almost offer their cure for cancer before some scientists came forward to criticize the visitors and then the staged scientists terrorists attacks happened which gave the visitors the excuse to start suspecting scientists. Since the new series is only two hours old there is the possibility that they plan on taking some time to develop deeper plotlines of the series, but in television today they run the risk of having the show getting canceled before some of the most interesting aspects of the show get into full swing.

For more thoughts on slowly developing Sci-Fi see my post on the series Defying Gravity.

What did you think of the third episode tonight?

I figured the would be assassin was actually a visitor. I'm glad to see that they are going to call the V's that form a resistance the fifth column just like in the original miniseries. However, I didn't anticipate the V helping Alan Tudyk to regain his memory was going to be a member of the fifth column. At first I didn't know what he meant when he said that she Erica would make an excellent ally. Poor Alan Tudyk! First he gets killed in Serenity and now V. I'm surprised they didn't kill off his character on Dollhouse yet too. I also didn't predict that the young girl V was going to be Morena Baccarin's daughter. Did anyone else think that Morena Baccarin's character was being played by Bridget Moynahan at first?

ESPN used the same music that ABC is using for the commercials of V. When ESPN used the music for a highlight reel during SportsCenter they showed the credits for the song. I found it interesting that the name of the song is Uprising and its from an album called Resistance (by a band called Muse).

Now you might say that makes sense given what the show is about, but all that ABC is using the music for the V commercials is a few seconds of instrumental background a loud sound effect. If they were using the lyrics from the song then I wouldn't be surprised by the title of the song, but since the lyrics isn't the reason that ABC is using the song in the commercial I find this to be an odd coincidence.

I'm still finding the series interesting. As I said, I need to look at it as a completely different show in order to enjoy it. I was watching the end when they normally say something like "Next week on V"......but instead they said, "Next week on the final episode for the season.".... WTF!? Since when does a "season" consist of 4 episodes? It seems we are going to be left hanging before anything really got established, sadness.
