[DO NOT USE] SWG 14-day Trial Client
PLEASE BE ADVISED: The use of the Sony SWG 14-day Trial client is illegal, and considered piracy. Anyone found to be using this client to attempt to log into our Test Center will be banned from all SWGEmu Properties, including Test Center, Forums, and IRC.

There are multiple legal ways to acquire a legitimate client, should you need one. Amazon.com, Ebay, etc. are examples of online stores our community members have been successfully finding very inexpensive copies of SWG.

You will only need "An Empire Divided" (the original boxed games from '03) to play on Test Center. However, any legitimate copy of SWG, including "Complete Online Adventures" (and all the NGE patches it comes with) and the "Direct Digital Download" from Sony, will work perfectly with the emulator.

Remember, you must own a legitimate copy of SWG to utilize the emulator.

Thanks for your cooperation. We look forward to seeing you on Test Center

Im not advocating the use of the 14 day trial, but how Is it considered illeagal to use the free trial for a free emulater? I understand its against the rules for the swgemu just curious as to why.

The 14-day trial is just that -a trial. It's licensed for 14 days of use on a SOE server.

We don't want this project to have any legal problems. Therefore everyone who plays needs to have their own copy of the game. That way, we are not falling foul of copyright with the client - as all our players have bought and own the client software. And we are not falling foul of copyright with the server, as the server has been independantly written from scratch.

Lucas and SOE are fiercely protective of their copyright, so we have to be as above-board and legal as possible. As i'm sure you can appreciate, none of the servers or EMU teams have the resources to go head to head with Lucas or SOE in a legal battle.

You have to buy a license to use their software. That's what makes emulators legal - 1. you have paid for the right to use the game, and 2. there is no law requiring you to use Sony's servers.

Using the trial is not 'purchasing a license' and is therefore actionable.

What about the 14 day trial disk given in Lucas Arts Star Wars: Best of PC 5 game product?

If it says 14 days and it's a trial then no you can't use it.

The whole reason why the emulator is legal is because if you own a copy of the game, then you own the content used and SOE can't come after you or us with their law goons. However, if you use a trial disk you are effectivley borrowing the content without giving it back, which is where the issue lies.

What if you already own the game? I don't know if my cd's are in good enough condition to install (Rage of the wookies, btw.)

As long as you own an original copy of An Empire Divided (or a set that includes it) then you are legal.

If your CDs are too scratched to run (unlikely IMO) then maybe you could borrow a friend's disks to do the install.

Hi,

You guys say that using a trial client it's illegal, but only in some country. In my country it's not illegal to use any software until it expire or don't run any more.
Let explain, if a software only can run 14x in client side, it will recuse to open the 15º time, so if I force that, if crack or generated serial, I did an illegal act.

But if the software need a server side action to don't run as expect, use that software until that "action" occurs isn't illegal.

I know that use trial client is illegal in the country where the server runs, but not here.

I'm playing SWG in Sony server in trial time, when that expire I will have to download almost 8Gb again to play in Test server?

Don't have any way to buy some signature or any think that transform the trial client in "normal" client?

Regards

No, do not download 8gb of files. 1. The EULA for Digital Downloads from SOE has been changed and strictly forbids the use of the client software on "Private Servers". 2. If you are thinking of downloading a SWG torrent, that is called stealing and is illegal no matter where you live.

There are many ways to obtain a legit copy of CD's for SWG through web-stores such as eBay, Amazon, etc. Usually for only $5-$10.

SWGEMU can detect this too and will ban your account. Has to be full purchased copy.

Let me understand, if I buy a digital copy of the game, I can't play in other servers. But if I buy the same data blocks in a cdrom media, I can, right?

I told almost 8gb because after the decompression of the update package, that I already downloaded to play in Sony server.

And here it's not illegal to download that... is crime if I download and sell for anybody.

Vader974 mentioned that SWG maybe exist in torrent, so I visited some trackers to get the md5sum digest of some cd-riped packages, to see how different is the "original" client from 14-trial... and for my surprise, the differences it's almost null ... maybe some head context or package information.

So I doubt that the trial client have some signature or send some package informing that it's trial, to check that, I will connect in SWGEmu and sniff the connection.

Okay, there are some things to do while my cds is not here...

If you're concerned about the fidelity of your original disks, then downloading those same original disks via torrent should be ok IMHO, since you already purchased the game.

You are in essence downloading a backup for software you legitimately own. A backup you could have theoretically made yourself anyway.

Of course, SWGEmu may have a different opinion...
