Due to the Free Character Transfer Service, a number of servers have essentially become ghost towns as much of the game's remaining population has chosen to converge on a small number of servers (example: Starsider).

As a result of this, Star Wars Galaxies Community Manager, Draakull, has announced today that 12 servers will be shutdown on October 15th, 2009, at 5PM PDT, leaving 13 remaining. The creation of new characters on these servers is now disabled.

The servers listed below will be shut down:

* Corbantis
* Europe-Infinity
* Intrepid
* Kauri
* Kettemoor
* Lowca
* Naritus
* Scylla
* Tarquinas
* Tempest
* Valcyn
* Wanderhome

To help facilitate any players still remaining on these servers, the Free Character Transfer Service has been extended through to October 15th, 2009. Beginning today, all characters still remaining on the aforementioned servers are eligible for a one time free transfer to any of the remaining 13 servers.

What do you think about this move by SOE? Personally, having played Star Wars Galaxies in recent months, I think it's a great move. When I played on my home server of Starsider this summer, the place was hopping like it was launch day.

Farewell, Infinity.

It is sad that it has come to this so unneccesarily.

Call me opportunistic, but if the emulator teams manage to finish the release quickly enough I see this playing out in our favour. That is the final, undeniable proof that the original is well on its way to becoming yet another carcass on the heap of dead MMOs. All those players looking for a place to go... SOE-SWG's sun is setting, but ours is about to dawn.

I was thinking the same thing.

Once SOE announced the "Free Character Transfer", you pretty much knew this was inevitable. Now it's official. I'm very surprised at some of the servers that didn't make the cut. I recently logged on to Shadowfire (my home server) and it was just dead. The most players I ever saw on at once was about 10 and this was at various times and days of the week including "peak" times.

Well well, this is an interesting, if not unexpected, turn of events. As said before me, this could very well mean a surge of new players for the emulator community. On a side note, I'm glad my good old Flurry isn't on the chopping block, for that would mean the destruction of the CH museme.

so long Valcyn... dang. it was never one of the "bigtime" servers but i oddly still feel attached to it in some ways. oh well not that it matters, pretty soon youll see more and more servers being shut down. as far as im concerned SWG's death knell came a long time ago. this is just evidence of the carcass decomposing.

still tho... R.I.P. Valcyn.

Well, thats it. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't play NGE without my beloved Corbantis.

I had a toon that i played with for some time on scylla.

And so begins the long goodbye for SOE's Star Wars Galaxies...

SWGEMu's Star Wars Galaxies on the other hand is looking up.

I started my first char on Corbantis, and then played mostly on Scylla, and Lowca. All are on the chopping block. No matter really since I've not played there since '05, but wow, all my homes are gone.

I know this is a bit old, but still... Kettemoor was the original Official RP Server of SWG. If its gone, then wow. And it was crowded even during the CU and into the NGE from what I heard.

And Lowca. Jeez. It was so popular I think there's an entire emu-server-to-be dedicated to it. That totally sucks.

So long Lowca...it was a good home and will be missed. Flurry is just not the same.
