 Napalm's Guide to Roleplaying
Here is a little roleplaying guide I have been working on to help people who know nothing about it and to establish some general guidelines. By no means am I a RP Nazi and I don't think less of those who don't do it or are "bad" at it. It's not for everyone and sometimes I'm not in the mood for it either, I just wanna kill stuff. Feel free to comment and/or make suggestions of improvement as this is a work in progress and I'm looking for other ideas....... Once you have played Star Wars Galaxies for a while, usually you become one of three things. 1. a PvP'er 2. a Roleplayer 3. Bored What is roleplaying? For those that choose to become active as a roleplayer, here are a few tips to help you get started. By no means is this supposed to be the ultimate guide in the universe. Just a guide to help you get started. Roleplaying is where participants act out the role of their character as if it is a real person that exsists in a real world. What roleplaying isn't..Roleplaying does not mean buy a suit of stormtrooper armor and become Tom Jackass, tormenting and pestering other players. It also does not mean pretending something your character is not. As much as you want to be, you are not Jabba's right hand man, you are not Darth Vader's secret apprentince, and you are not some wealthy family's spoiled brat of a child impervious to Imperial authority. Tip #1 Avoid using slang, leet and emoticonsWhen roleplaying avoid using slang (lol, rofl, omg), leet (1337, n00b, PWN) and emoticons ( , , ). Remember your character is using his voice even though it shows onscreen as text. I understand words like n00b and PWN are pretty much common place in speech today, but Boba Fett wouldn't have a clue what you are talking about. If you want to project an lol or a , the game has plenty of social commands that can be used as visual emphasis, for example: /lol, /smile, etc.. Tip #2 Ignore all visual informationWhen roleplaying you must pretend the visual information floating above a players head does not exsist. This includes names, guilds, and faction affiliation. If you have never met the person before, then you know nothing about them. However, some information can be gained from visual apperances such as Imperial uniforms, flightsuits, etc. Some players will go as far as to place visual information which cannot be provided by the game into their characters bio, such as scars, missing limbs, sheathed/slung weapons, so it is always a good thing to /examine someone before interacting with them. Tip #3 Play your character as if real consequences exsist for your actionsThis one is important and seems to be overlooked by a majority of players. What I mean by this is, if you were beligerant, abussive or disrespectful to the local authorities in a real Star Wars Universe. You could expect to be possibly arrested, shot, killed, tortured, or dragged off to Dathomir Prison for a couple decades. Does this mean roleplaying Imperials get to do whatever they want and get away with it? Absolutely not! For roleplaying to be fun everyone needs to respect others rights to enjoy the game and have fun. Tip #4 Military customs and courtesiesThis one is sort of my pet peve as I am a former Marine. This is mainly for the Imperials, the Rebels I will cover at the end. Whenever anyone joins the Imperials it seems they just want to salute every Imperial they see. Proper protocal is that all enlisted personnel (Private - Master Sergeant) salute all officers (Warrant Officer II - Colonel) and address them as Sir. The officer will then give a salute in return and address them by their rank ie. Private, Corpral, Sergeant, etc.. Junior ranking officers only salute senior ranking officers and address them as Sir. The senior officer will then give a salute in return and address them by their rank. Enlisted personel do not salute each other and just refer to each other by their ranks. Officers of the same rank are not required to salute each other. Saluting only takes place when both players are in proper uniform. Proper uniform is Rank displayed, TIE Pilot suit (Long leather gloves/Black & Uniform boots/Black is closest to movie accesories), AT-AT Pilot suit (Long leather gloves/White & Uniform boots/White is closest to movie accesories), Dress Uniform (purchased from the recruiter), any (complete) factional armor set (sorry the Empire never issued composite armor, bone armor, etc..). Not every Imperial is a trooper and just because you are a pilot does not make you an officer. Once again this was maily for the Imperials. As for the Rebels, they are not a "military" organization perse and therfore really have no customs and courtesis, even if they did they would be fairly lax and undiciplined.

 Re: Napalm's Guide to Roleplaying
There are options in the options menu under one of the display tabs (character, I think) where you can turn off all the tags above a person's name, or so it only shows up if you put your curser over them, or if you select them, etc.
Putting up the tag that you are an RPer helps a lot so others know how to identify you. Putting up a <<RPer>> tagline in your bio would aid, too.

 Re: Napalm's Guide to Roleplaying
Aside from all the fun, one major thing I didn't see in here that probably should be added are names, I'm sorry but things like WookieeFeet, IKillJedi, Butteredtoast, ect. are not names. (And yes I have seen people try to RP with names like these.)
I got lucky when I made my name up with this formula first name = (first three letters of first name) + (first two letters of last name) last name = (first two letters of mothers maiden name) + (first three letters of the city you are born in). It actually works well with most of my family, but for some reason it only sounds good for a few of my friends.

I would be: Dancr Gogar Not sure that's much of a name but if you added an "E" at least it would be 'dancer'... that's kind of appropriate. That last name though would have to go.

 Re: Napalm's Guide to Roleplaying
Some good suggestions so far, I forgot about names lol. I'll work on some revisions.
Return of the Jedi (if written today)
Luke Skywalker: Your overconfidance is your weakness. Emperor: Your faith in your friends is yours. Darth Vader: PWNED!

With this formula I'd be Jorca Motor Or to alternate the last name maybe it would sound better to revers the formula so It'd be Jorca Tormo Do I seem like a Jorca Tormo to you all? I get images of a killer whale personally

I like the formula but I think it needs to have some sort of variation in how many letters go into each name! Otherwise everyone is going to be running around with 5 letter names and surnames, and that would just be plain silly! Maybe add a letter depending on whether the year, month and day you were born on is odd or even. So 3 odds would mean 3 additional letters you can add into any input, such as the mother's maiden name bit etc. Obviously your name generator is just a guide line, but I like the idea of coming up with a more diverse SW name generator.

Mine almost sounds like something that would violate forum rules if I post it, so I think I should play it safe. I'd hate to have to give myself another warning - I'm still upset abut the last time I temp banned myself.
