This game is going to be mind blowing!!!!

I also got an email from Gamespot with a link to a video that the Developers posted today. It describes, in an awesome 10 minute documentary, basically their reason and goals for a Knights of the Old Republic MMO.

I know you all are excited as much as I am.

With any luck, this should be a good reason to lessen the number of jedis. Wanna play a jedi? Go play SWTOR!

Haha! Sorry I'm a great anti-jedi protester! :P

On thing worries me immediately:

Quote:
Our mission is to create the best story-driven games in the world. We believe that the compelling, interactive storylines in Star Wars: The Old Republic are a significant innovation to MMOs and will offer an entertainment experience unlike any other.

I just can't see how it's possible for an MMO to be story-driven. Unless they create a different story for every player, we are all going to be following the same story, and that couldn't work for me. It destroys the realism and individuality.

One of the mistakes of the NGE was making an intro that featured you as part of a story. Do they expect me to believe that Han and Chewie rescued every one of us?

For me, this means:
"GET READY TO EXPERIENCE THE GREATEST STAR WARS SAGA EVER TOLD....... EVERYONE ELSE'S!"

Yeah, although i sort of got the feeling its going to be alot like those old books i used to read as a kid, anybody remember the choose your own adventure books ?

Odviously story based can only have so many options, and paths to choose from. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The fact that they say they have content out the wazoo is fine, but MMO's for me kind of get dry at the end, the last level, the last raids, etc etc, you can only do so much. But with SWG, i was never really at a loss for things to do no matter what character build i had, or people who were online guild/friends wise. This will be a major sticking point for me, but i guess its a little early to tell, and we'll see what the eventual beta for this will bring.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how this one turns out. It looks to me like they're going to be more like Guild Wars with the NPC companions and story-centric gameplay.

One thing's for sure, it will not satisfy initial hopes for a pre-CU done right. It seems like everyone's a heroic warrior from start to finish, with no humble roles. I guess that's what Kotor has always been, but at least there you weren't surrounded by thousands of equally 'special' heroes all doing the same things as you. I think this is best approached as a single-player or coop game with MMO-style PVP.
Of course, there still isn't much information and there's lots that can change before launch, so I guess we have to wait and see.

as much as i love the old republic era, this is not going to work very well, i think they Bioware should hold off on this till there's more to TOR era. It just doesn't have enough for it, I will congragulate them if it makes it to stores, but i don't think it'll last long, It's rumored that Bioware thinks this new mmo will have SWG go down. on another note Bioware also gave up the third Knights of the Old Republic game to Obsidian. I give all hopes to Obsidian, please make the third KotOR rock, cause this time they won't be rushed by LucasArts like last time and screwed up KotOR 2.

But.. that's the whole advantage. They chose the most unknown time frame in Star Wars history so that they have the most elbow room to elaborate their stories. They pretty much invented what most people think of as the Old Republic with Kotor, and now they don't have to worry about canon so much and are really free to do whatever they can imagine. I think this is a strength for this game.

That's not to say I like the direction they're taking the game, with "Everyone's a hero", but I still think they have a very good chance, and I trust BioWare more than Obsidian.

i'm having second thoughts about tor

-level based
-cheap cartoony graphics
-no persistent housing
-no aerial combat

What does this remind you of?

I completely agree. I could look past all the rest, even the graphics, if it weren't level based. I'm so tired of the quest-kill-rinse-repeat mindset.

Which is a shame really, the idea that WoW can be brought down, by a clone game with esentially the same playstyle is rediculous. I doubt even wow would hold a candle to pre cu SWG, maybe Lucasarts wouldnt be so wrong in digging up the code for pre nge galaxies, wrap it in a kotor timeframe, update the armor, weps, ships, planets, throw in some of this "content" they're talking about then maybe, maybe, they could fell the giant that is warcraft. Hell id pay a monthly for a redone swg even if i had to suffer through KOTOR's timeframe, and yes, for all you anti jedi people, countless jedi.

I was excited to see the project at first, but the web video going around didnt instill me with the promise that the first rumblings of SWG did.

I'm definitely with you on the first two, but I was unaware that there would be no persistent housing and no space combat. Do you know where that information was released?

One of the posts i read on the tor forum had a link to an interview. Housing is not available at launch, but there are discussions about it, and space isnt even on the table. Who knows what will happen in the future? The game is at least a year from launch, so how long it takes to get space online is anyone's guess.

My issue is they pretty much acted like SWG never existed in the interview. At least give a nod to what started SW as a MMO in the first place.

My judgment will be held until it's closer to release. I'm prone to believe that this will be more for the wow'ers though.

If anything looks promising, it's Darkfall and Crusades. Hopefully when I'm playing the sandbox that is darkfall, I won't find any cat doodoo. :(
